What Is a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck, also called abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and repositions weakened or separated abdominal muscles to create a flatter, firmer abdomen. Dr. Kimberly Jones performs tummy tuck surgery in Cary, NC, for people whose midsection has changed after pregnancy, weight loss, or aging.

What Does a Tummy Tuck Improve?

A tummy tuck tightens the abdominal wall, removes excess skin, and contours the waistline for a smoother, more fit appearance. Because abdominal skin and muscles can stretch beyond what exercise alone can repair, many patients choose this procedure to address changes after pregnancy or major weight loss.

What Is a ‘Drainless’ Tummy Tuck?

A drainless tummy tuck involves using an advanced internal suturing technique instead of surgical drains to reduce fluid buildup and increase comfort. This technique helps the body absorb fluid naturally, eliminating the need for patients to clean and maintain drains, which can be an annoying part of recovery.

Benefits of a drainless tummy tuck include:

  • No surgical drains to manage at home
  • Less postoperative discomfort and fewer activity restrictions
  • Smoother, more streamlined recovery with fewer follow-up needs
  • Reduced fluid buildup thanks to internal progressive-tension sutures
  • More freedom of movement after surgery
  • Easier wound care without tubes or external hardware
  • Improved scar quality due to better skin adhesion and less tension
  • Faster return to normal activities for many patients

Dr. Jones performs a drainless tummy tuck whenever appropriate, using drains only when combining extensive liposuction with a tummy tuck or in cases with other extenuating circumstances.

Tummy Tuck Technique Options

Full Tummy Tuck

A full tummy tuck addresses both the upper and lower abdomen through 2 incisions: one made horizontally along the lower abdomen, and another around the belly button. Dr. Jones tightens separated abdominal muscles (diastasis recti), removes excess skin, and ensures the belly button looks natural. A tummy tuck is the most common option for patients after pregnancy or significant weight loss. Dr. Jones uses Exparel®, a long-lasting, non-opioid pain medication at no additional cost to enhance your comfort during recovery.

Mini Tummy Tuck

Best for those with mild to moderate loose skin below the belly button, a mini tummy tuck focuses on the lower abdomen only. It involves a shorter incision, no belly button incision, and typically allows for a faster recovery.

Extended Tummy Tuck

This approach is ideal for patients with excess skin that extends around the hips or sides. Through an incision that may extend beyond the hips, it offers a more comprehensive reshaping of the midsection, especially following major weight loss.

Fleur-de-Lis Tummy Tuck

For patients with substantial laxity, especially after significant weight loss, the fleur-de-lis technique is often the best option. Through an incision shaped like an anchor or an inverted T, it removes both vertical and horizontal excess skin, allowing for a more dramatic tightening.

While liposuction isn’t technically a part of any traditional tummy tuck procedure, it’s commonly added as a secondary procedure. Liposuction can be added to a full tummy tuck, a mini tummy tuck, and even an extended tummy tuck. It removes excess fat and creates smooth contours.

Tummy Tuck Recovery Timeline

Even though the pace of your recovery may vary, this timeline gives you a good idea of what to expect after undergoing a tummy tuck.

Day 1-2

  • You’ll go home the same day with detailed instructions and support.
  • Gentle walking is encouraged right away to promote circulation and reduce stiffness.
  • You should walk slightly hunched over to minimize tension on the incision.
  • You may shower starting on day 2.

Week 1

  • Continue walking frequently in short intervals throughout the day.
  • Expect to remain slightly bent at the waist.
  • Pain and swelling are most noticeable this week but gradually improve.
  • Wear your compression garment 23 hours a day for the first 4 weeks to help reduce swelling and enhance your results.
  • Many patients begin feeling ready to return to light activities by the end of the week.

Week 2-3

  • Most patients feel well enough to return to work 10 to 14 days after the surgery, depending on the physical nature of their job.
  • You will still walk slightly hunched for about 2 weeks, slowly straightening more each day.
  • Continue wearing your compression garment

Week 4-8

  • You can now wear your compression garment 12 hours a day for the next 4 weeks, then continue as needed for comfort. The more you wear it, the better.
  • By the end of week 4, most patients can stand upright comfortably.

Week 6

  • You can safely resume normal activities, including light exercise, at about the 6-week mark, depending on your healing.
  • Swelling continues to improve over the next several months.

3-6 Months

  • Resume gentle core exercises, like planks, at the 12-week mark.
  • You should wait at least 6 to 9 months before starting more aggressive abdominal exercises (such as glute-ham-type sit-ups) to protect your repair.

Dr. Jones will guide your progress at every step, adjusting your timeline based on your healing and ensuring you feel supported throughout your recovery.
