What Is Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation, often called a “boob job,” enhances the shape and size of your breasts with implants. Choosing to undergo breast augmentation is a personal decision that is best made with thoughtful guidance.
At ERA Aesthetics, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Kimberly Jones educates patients about the procedure with warmth and honesty. As a woman and a mother, she understands the reasons you may have for wanting to enhance the appearance of your breasts.
Who’s a Good Candidate for Breast Augmentation?
You can benefit from getting breast implants if you:
- Have always been dissatisfied with the size of your breasts
- Believe that larger breasts will be more proportional to your body
- Feel that your breasts have lost volume with age, weight loss, or pregnancy
The best candidates for breast augmentation surgery are healthy women who have maintained a stable weight and have adequate skin tone. Breast augmentation alone does not correct the sagging when the breast skin is lax.
Breast Augmentation Options
Many considerations are involved with breast augmentation, including incision pattern, implant placement, and other breast implant options, such as choosing silicone or saline implants. As an experienced breast augmentation surgeon, Dr. Jones guides you through these decisions, considering your personal preferences, goals, and anatomy.
Breast Implants
Choosing breast implants includes decisions involving their size and the type of implant. If you want natural-looking breast augmentation results, choosing implants in proportion with your body’s frame is more important than focusing on cup size. The same size implants that look great on someone else may not be the right choice for you.
Saline vs. Silicone Gel
Implants are filled with either a biocompatible saline solution or cohesive silicone gel. Many patients believe silicone gel implants look and feel more like natural breasts. There are different levels of cohesiveness within the category of silicone gel implants.
Breast Implant Brands
Dr. Jones works with trusted, FDA-approved implant manufacturers and helps you choose the option that best aligns with your goals and body. These include Mentor® and Allergan®, which offer a wide range of shapes, sizes, and profiles.
We also offer Motiva® breast implants, an innovative option with an advanced shell design and gel consistency. They are engineered to adapt naturally to movement and anatomy, offering a refined, modern option for select patients.
Dr. Jones will walk you through the benefits and considerations of each implant type during your consultation.
Incision Placement
Dr. Jones carefully selects incision placement based on safety, anatomy, and aesthetic outcome.
Inframammary (Under the Breast)
Dr. Jones most often recommends the inframammary incision because it provides excellent visibility and precision during surgery and is associated with a lower rate of capsular contracture. The scar is discreetly hidden within the natural breast crease.
Periareolar (Around the Nipple)
This incision is placed along the lower edge of the areola and may be appropriate for certain patients depending on anatomy and goals.
Transaxillary (Through the Armpit)
In select cases, Dr. Jones can place implants through an incision in the underarm, avoiding scars on the breast itself.
Implant Placement
Implant placement plays a significant role in the final look and feel of your results.
Subglandular (Above the Muscle)
Placed above the chest muscle, this option may allow for faster recovery and works well for patients with sufficient natural breast tissue.
Submuscular (Below the Muscle)
This placement provides additional tissue coverage over the implant and may reduce the visibility of implant edges in thinner patients.
Subfascial
Positioned beneath the fascial layer, this technique offers a balance between subglandular and submuscular placement for select candidates.
Dual Plane
A commonly used technique that combines muscle coverage at the top of the implant with natural breast positioning below, offering a soft, natural contour.
Implant Profile
An implant profile refers to how far the breast projects forward from the chest wall. Options include low, medium, and high profiles, and the right choice depends on your chest width, tissue characteristics, and aesthetic preferences. Dr. Jones takes a conservative, thoughtful approach to sizing, prioritizing balance, proportion, and long-term satisfaction over extremes.

Combining Breast Augmentation With Other Procedures
Many patients choose to combine breast augmentation with additional procedures for more comprehensive results. Breast augmentation is commonly paired with:
- Body contouring
- Breast lift
- Liposuction
- Tummy tuck

Breast Augmentation FAQs
How much does breast augmentation cost in Cary, NC?
The cost of breast augmentation in Cary and Raleigh depends on several factors, including the type of implants used and whether you combine augmentation with other procedures. Many patients also choose to explore financing options to make treatment more manageable.
Will my results look natural?
Yes. Dr. Jones specializes in natural-looking outcomes that complement your body’s proportions.
How long do breast implants last?
Breast implants are long-lasting but not considered lifetime devices. Many patients enjoy their results for 10 to 15 years or longer.
Can breast augmentation be combined with a breast lift?
Absolutely. A breast lift can improve sagging, while augmentation restores volume, so they are often performed together for optimal results.
